How long should postoperative knee braces be worn? How to use it correctly?

For many knee joint surgeries, such as anterior fork reconstruction, meniscus suturing, posterior fork reconstruction, etc., braces need to be worn after surgery. However, many patients may not know how long to wear them and how to use them correctly. Today, I will share some knowledge about braces with you.

The function of braces

To understand how to use braces, one must first understand what braces are used for. There are three main functions of braces.

1. Protective function

We usually use hinge braces with metal strips on both sides, which can provide good support and protection for both sides of the knee. The inward and outward rotation of the knee is the main mechanism of injury to the cruciate ligament and meniscus, so it is important to avoid patients developing knee adduction in the early postoperative period. And the brace played this role.

2. The function of adjusting the angle

Braces can be used to adjust angles, and the recovery progress of angles varies depending on different surgeries. Some surgeries require braking for a period of time after the operation before starting to move, so we use braces to lock the knee in a 0 degree straight position and prevent it from not extending straight. When practicing gait, open a certain angle appropriately to avoid knee weakness and falls.

3. Psychological effects

Wearing braces will give patients a sense of security and prevent the occurrence of secondary injuries. In addition, wearing braces is also a reminder to others that you are a patient and need to avoid collision.

1, Simple anterior fork reconstruction

We recommend wearing braces throughout the day for two weeks after surgery, and fully locking them in the 0 degree straight position. Only take it off when practicing activity. After two weeks, the brace can be worn during sleep and during the day, usually for 6-8 weeks. The decision to remove the brace depends on the patient's lower limb strength control.

2, Simple meniscus suture

In the case of meniscus suturing, we generally require that the support should not be placed on the ground too early within four weeks. Therefore, except for practicing range of motion, the support should be removed and locked in the 0 degree position as much as possible during other times. Try to wear braces for 6-8 weeks or more.

3, Reconstruction of medial collateral ligament

We generally require patients to fully brake within four weeks after surgery for the reconstruction of the medial collateral ligament, and their range of motion exercises should slowly begin after four weeks. So, the brace is fixed in a fully extended position around it.

4, Composite situation

If there is both anterior fork reconstruction and meniscus suturing, we will refer to the rehabilitation standard based on the most severe condition of the two situations.

The wearing of braces is very necessary in the early and middle stages of postoperative recovery, providing us with a good healing and rehabilitation environment.
