Precautions for wearing lumbar braces

Precautions for wearing lumbar braces: Lumbar braces are a common way to fix patients with lumbar and back diseases. By restricting lumbar movement, they support and fix the waist, achieving the goal of protecting the lumbar spine and promoting postoperative recovery. The correct use of lumbar braces includes selecting appropriate lumbar braces, proper wearing methods, and reasonable wearing time.

1. Choose appropriate braces: If the patient's condition is mild and only experiences mild lumbar trauma and pain during the acute phase, or if the patient recovers well after routine lumbar surgery, soft braces can be chosen to fix the waist circumference. If the lumbar trauma is severe, such as lumbar burst fracture, severe osteoporosis, lumbar spondylolisthesis, etc., a rigid lumbar brace can be chosen;

2. Correct wearing method: Patients need to wear lumbar braces while lying in bed. After wearing them, they should get up and lie flat. First, place the strap on one side of the brace under the body, align the hard material part of the waist strap or the back half of the brace with the waist and back. After lying flat, place the front half of the brace on the chest and abdomen and fasten it with a fastening strap. After fixation, fingers can be inserted to check the tightness;

3. Reasonable wearing time: The wearing time of lumbar braces should not be too long. If it is acute back pain or mild lumbar sprain, the wearing time of lumbar braces is about 3 weeks. The wearing time of lumbar braces after lumbar surgery should be judged according to different conditions, surgical methods, and whether there is osteoporosis. Most patients need to wear them for 1-3 months, and a small number of patients may need to wear them for 3-6 months, or even longer. The specific wearing time also needs to be determined according to the doctor's advice.

For patients with skin damage or allergies in the lower back, it is not recommended to wear lumbar braces, and braces should not be worn while lying in bed or sleeping. During the process of wearing lumbar braces, it is necessary to undergo appropriate rehabilitation training under the guidance of a doctor to prevent atrophy of the lumbar muscles.
